Privet Drive

← All locationsBOOK-SOURCED · FOUNDING EDITION

Number four is Harry’s childhood home with the Dursleys.

Overview

Privet Drive is presented as an emphatically ordinary suburban street. Number four conceals Harry’s connection to magic while exposing his difficult life with his aunt, uncle and cousin. The contrast between the Dursleys’ desired respectability and the magical events around Harry establishes much of the opening novel’s humour and tension.

Reading notes

This entry distinguishes what the story establishes from what a character believes. For context, read the named chapters rather than relying on an isolated statement. A film scene, game mechanic or fan theory is not evidence that the same event occurs in the novels.
