Albus Dumbledore

← All charactersBOOK-SOURCED · FOUNDING EDITION

A formidable wizard whose guidance often arrives as a question rather than an answer.

Overview

Dumbledore is headmaster when Harry begins at Hogwarts. He combines considerable magical ability with a habit of withholding information until he believes the time is right. His conversations with Harry develop the novels’ ideas about choice, responsibility and the limits of power; his judgements are consequential, but should not be treated as infallible.

Reading notes

This entry distinguishes what the story establishes from what a character believes. For context, read the named chapters rather than relying on an isolated statement. A film scene, game mechanic or fan theory is not evidence that the same event occurs in the novels.
